Robert Is Dead
(click here to listen or download as MP3)

Robert is dead, if that really was his name
All we know is Robert is dead

Mourners gathering across the street from me, they're playing his music to carry him home
I can't hear them, the highway is busy today

Robert is dead, no one knows the reason why
All we know is Robert is dead

Slept in a chair by the greenhouse door
Part of our daily scenery no more

Didn't read what the newspaper said
All I know is what Robert is, Robert is dead

A black wreath memory lingers now
Where he was, Robert is dead

Sun came out for the first time in two weeks
Earth machines have been waiting for Robert to sleep

Last neighbor was a miniature golf course

Robert is dead, if that really was his name
All I know is Robert is dead

Robins grow fat on this morning in May
Something given, they're taking his garbage away

Robert is dead
It's a job for the sanitation crew
